Cranky drivers today

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 3:56 PM
LOLZ I JUST GOT BITCHED OUT BY A TRIMETTER FOR *TALKING*. I was on the phone in the front seat, the driver asked me to hang up, so I did. I start talking to my sister sitting next to me and she goes "DO YOU HAVE A BLUETOOTH OR SOMETHING? I HATE CHATTER ON A BUS!!!!" So I called and left her router ID with customer service and hopefully the super will put the fear of $DEITY in her.

Never did that icon fit better, that's Center Garage, the main TriMet barn and since this bus was a 17, the one this chick works out of. The schedule number if you want to avoid her royal crankyness is 1711, FYI. LOLZ.

lol...oh, portland...

We're in the news being stereotypical again.

I thought it was pretty hilarious. Plus, doesn't the broth consist of beef as well? WTF.

For all you sexy kittens....

Looking for great food and good ambience and decent customer service.

I've been in training the last three days. My morning routine is disturbed, as I am now biking from the apt to the Lloyd Center, getting on a Max-train for 45 minutes, then biking from Merlo to the training facility. Max cars are made to hold at most 4 bikes (and plenty of seating /standing room for people). Each morning, there have been points where there were 8-10 bikes squeezed in. The pedestrian commuters seem to take in in stride, as it were.

But I've been lunching at a little local joint called The Fresh Thyme, which does soups and paninis and salads. They are tucked behind the Burger King - you basically have to know it's there in order to find it - and have a brisk lunch trade. I normally don't like soup, and don't trust strange foods, but their chicken & pear soup was very tasty, and the sandwiches have been coming with watermelon slices. Recommended, if you are near 26 & Bethany in Beaverton.

What did you have for lunch?

PSU students:

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 11:48 AM
So I am started at PSU this Fall (going to orientation tomorrow) and I had been told by my BF that PSU offers basic health insurance. I decided to look that up to see if they offer dental as well (see previous post asking about dentists).

Sure enough, they offer some really affordable dental care. http://www.shac.pdx.edu/dental/fees.php

Just thought I would pass this info along in case other PSU student were unaware of this.

Occult groups

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 10:01 AM
Here's something different for you guys.

I'm looking for a mystery school/occult society that I can join. I've been a practitioner for nearly a decade, but I feel like my practices have stagnated and I need to take the next step and join a group to further my studies and keep myself motivated. I've done some preliminary research, and I know there are such groups in town (Portland is full of fellow awesome weird people after all :) ) but I've been unable to find physical locations to go talk to people and see what's what.

I'm 21, going on 22 in a few months, female (since I know in some groups these things matter) and I have a basic understanding and background in Hermetics. I'm looking to join a group that genuinely helps people grow, and isn't just hungry for power and money. I do not have the ability to put a lot of money into this, and I want to join a group where this isn't expected. I'm fine with donations that are within my ability.

I'd like it to be understood that I'm not looking to join a coven. I'm looking for something more along the lines of the Golden Dawn/Western Mystery traditions. I've got nothing against coven groups, but it's not the style of work that I do.

Thank you very much you awesome people. If you're worried about getting your locations hounded by fundies, just PM me and we can go from there.

I hear Kettleman's Bagel just opened on SW 4th and Taylor and is giving away free bagels and cream cheese and Coffee until 6pm.

Also, anyone catch Dave Chappelle's surprise show in Pioneer Courthouse Square last night?

I know this has been posted a million times, but I really don't feel like scouring the entries...

I need recommendations for a sliding scale dentist in Beaverton/Hillsboro. One that accepts Care Credit and Amex. I have a tooth that needs fixed ASAP, but I don't have insurance and I certainly don't have a lot of money.

Thanks in advance.

The Big Blue Room

So how much sunblock do three Irishmen and a Scot require on a day at the beach?

Not a joke. My life. The real answer? A lot. The SPF 50 came out in force, as did the umbrellas. And the drink umbrellas. And children, four of them, who could all swim much better than I can.

The real kicker was when the three year with the orange floatey arm things waddled past me into bigger waves than I was willing to deal with.

It was pretty rockin' fun. And that was before the mystery liquor drinks came out. You'd think I'd learn not to accept, "Hey, I just made up this alcoholic drink!" drinks from the Irish, but apparently it's a lesson I still need to learn. Times three.

This is all practice for our "camping" trip this weekend, which will involve cabins, WiFi, colcannon, beer in quantity and fire. I am really looking forward to it as a little vacation before the family vacation in a week and a half, which will be enjoyable, but probably not very restful.

On a more serious note, I'm glad we're going camping with the same family and kids (or at least the two that actually belong to said parents) because we're now looking at a date of September 1st for Doug's arrival. I've been in a flurry of paperwork to try and get legal guardianship and school registration all sorted out, which is kind of interesting from a strategic point of view, since I'm coordinating efforts in two states and two countries.

In the Irish sense of "may you live in interesting times", of course.

Still, I am very much looking forward to the arrival of my little monkey - which should be happening sometime in the first week of September.

And amidst all the confusion:

So this might be my last post in Portland.
I am sure you can carry on well without me.
The word on the streets is that Montana is already totally Portlandified...

Hamilton, with a population of 12,000, has an organic food store, a health food store, a natural food store, two produce markets, and a farmer's market.

But probably no naked bike rides.

Just Say Now: SisterMaryCupcake

  • Jul. 14th, 2009 at 10:38 PM
So you're interested in a variety pack of SisterMaryCupcakes eh? I thought so.

Here's the deal: I'll order a dozen velvets if someone wants to order a dozen of the others and we can make our own variety pack out in the street.

Spice cake with cream cheese frosting

Chocolate with pomegranate buttercream

Who's in?

WTF am I talking about: http://community.livejournal.com/pdx_cupcakes/4578.html

Yes I shot this through my dirty, dirty windshield waiting at a red light. I've wondered if it was abandoned for a few years but It wasn't bored up until now. This is wait I get for meandering a bit on my way home from school :)

HouseBoats

  • Jul. 14th, 2009 at 9:19 PM
After visiting a co-workers houseboat today, I am wondering about the chances of finding someone who is renting theirs outfor a day or a weekend, or even a week. It can be in Portland, or pretty much any lake in the state.

Anyone know the finances and websites I can use? Done some browsing on craigslist but not finding as much.

Thanks!

is there a planned parenthood or something going in in the pearl district? there were pro life people on 10th and johnson today with big graphic aborted fetus pictures and signs saying things like planned parenthood kills babies. i am wondering why they would choose that spot.

Bars + Jukebox

  • Jul. 14th, 2009 at 6:21 PM
What bar in any part of Portland has the best jukebox? I suppose that's relative, but by the best I mean choices that may include: Dinosaur Jr, The Replacements, The Misfits, Fugazi and the like. Basically 80s and 90s indie underground bands. Not so much aughties "indie." Does this exist? Thanks!

Camping & Hiking!

  • Jul. 14th, 2009 at 6:23 PM
Some girlfriends and I want to go hiking and camping on saturday. We were thinking spending the day hiking and just setting up camp somewhere back near the car. None of us own any legit camping gear that we could pack in with us so it has to be car camping.

Any recommendations??
